What is Open Source?

The biggest advantage of Open Source is that it is not only allowed to use the code, but also to modify it, and distribute the modified version. This has a specific and very positive effect: many users themselves will fix bugs or add new features (and then give the improved software back to the community) rather than developers who have to rely on error reports and then try to verify them. The result is an active community of contributors.

Second advantage: Open Source software usually is free.
